What does it mean when their are multiple slides behind a note in a guitar tab?

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/a/ac_dc/back_in_black_ver5_tab.htm

like 6/// for instance, does this just mean to repeat the slide two more times?
yeah, thanks anyways, I know its not a typo because its the highest rated version of the tab. I’ll just listen and see what it sounds like.

Just when you thought your question was only gonna be answered by morons, this guy shows up.

That means to slide up to an unspecified point on the neck. Just hold the note for however long it takes, then throw your hand towards the body of the guitar without giving up pressure right away, let go when and where you feel like it, then go back and continue wherever it was you left off. Rock’n'roll, man, rock’n'roll.

Does anyone have any tips on getting rid of nerves while singing?

Posted on December 30th, 2009 by admin in singing | 7 Comments »

During rehearsals I sing loud and confident. Also I used to sing a lot years ago but got out of the habit. Any tips on singing confidently without the audience hearing my nerves in my voice. That would really help.

Just focus heavily on your breathing. Count your breaths in and out. This has a double effect. First, it gives you something to focus on, counteracting your racing mind, and second, by focusing on proper breathing, you ultimately improve your technique.

Of course, with experience your nerves will decrease. I’ve been performing since I was 6 years old and at this point performing is second nature, it’s no different than rehearsal, which is what you should strive for. Tension kills sound, so while it’s bad for all performance, it’s especially bad for singing.

What scripture should I meditate to improve singing and reduce nervousness?

I recently joined the choir at church. I am a good singer for the choir, but have always wanted to lead a song or sing a solo. I don’t know if my talent is strong enough and I get very nervous. I have been practicing my singing and reading on how to reduce nervousness, but I would like God’s help. What scriptures should I meditate on to improve my singing and reduce my nervousness?

"Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!" Sing for God and the love of singing. Don’t worry about what people think, just sing your best and enjoy the singing.

What kind of guitar pickups would work best?

Posted on December 27th, 2009 by admin in guitar | 7 Comments »

I am currently trying to build a new guitar out of an old First Act guitar body. I am having trouble picking my pickups. I am trying to get an 80’s shred-metal kind of sound out of it, similar to the sound that Randy Rhoads or Doug Marks guitars make.

I already know that i need to get humbuckers to get the higher gain and sound quality. Only problem is, i dont know which brand or type to buy. Not to mention i’m on a limited budget. Any help would be great.

Alnico is a good affordable brand of Humbuckers.

Also how you wire your pickup into your guitar can effect the sound it puts out.

However, many guitarists for some reason think that pickups will give them a more "metal" sound.

Honestly its your amp makes 60% of it, Your fingers are 20%, and your pickups are 10% of the sound.

Get those cheaper Alnico pickups because they sound better than stock pickups and won’t break the bank. Save your money for a really good amp. Peavey is a favorite of mine.

What song has a verse, might actually be the chorus that goes ‘She’s beautiful as you are’. What song?

It’s more of a rock song. Not any Maroon 5 or hip hop
The voice has a tone like Nickelback.

What are some good ways to keep your voice from breaking while singing?

Posted on December 25th, 2009 by admin in singing | 2 Comments »

When ever I sing my voice keep breaking what do I do to make it happen less? Also what are some good ways to clear your throat in preperation for singing, and I wanted to know how to advance my vocal range.

The voice ‘breaking’ happens when the larynx suddenly goes back to its original position. The vocal chords are inserted in the larynx (Adam’s Apple) which is made of cartilage and suspended by muscles. When the air pressure under the larynx is too great (you are pushing too much air whilst singing) the larynx is pushed up by this pressure to its limits. Once it reaches its limits upwards, it will give in and come back to its resting position. What’s happening to you is that you are probably straining yourself by pushing too much air whilst singing (probably high notes). You need to keep this air pressure low by breathing through the diaphragm and keeping your ribcage expanded while you sing. To help you find it, try while you sing those ‘notes that break’ to open your arms shoulder height with your palms turned upwards and stretch your arms outwards. Try also bending your knees. By doing those things you help to keep your diaphragm low and your ribcage opened. Also try doing some deep breathing exercises such as, laying on your back, expand the belly area while breathing in. Hold the breath and slowly exhale very little air for as long as possible, breathing out through your teeth in a ’ssss’ sound. Do not let the belly sink in while doing this. This will expand your breathing and train your abdominal muscles.

All the best. Hope it helped.

How do guitar companies determine thicknesses for guitar picks?

Posted on December 25th, 2009 by admin in guitar | 2 Comments »

How do guitar companies determine how thick they make guitar picks? When I look at some picks they’re some random obscure number like 1.15mm or .88mm. Thanks
Yeah my favorite pick is a Dunlop nylon .88.

They make them in various thicknesses because guitarists have different preferences. The "random" numbers you’re seeing are the actual thickness of the pick in millimeters (they use those to measure small distances in countries other than the US). Picks also come in various shapes and materials (plastic and nylon being the most popular). I prefer Dunlop .60mm nylon picks. I actually switch between a thinner weight pick and a medium weight pick depending on the song I’m playing as well. Some call for a lighter more sweeping strum and the lighter picks work better for that. I highly recommend the nylon picks over plastic though. Those tortoise shell plastic Fender picks are the worst. They crack and then catch on the strings. Go to a guitar store and grab a bunch of different types and try them out. When you find the kind you like best, buy a bunch (because you’ll lose them a lot). Remember to always keep one in your pocket too ’cause you never know when you’ll come across a guitar that needs playing!

What are some Good Musical Theater songs for a Childrens Choir?

Posted on December 25th, 2009 by admin in choir | 3 Comments »

Our choir are up for a challenge. We have Few, but very strong Sopranos. The majority of the Choir are Mid Teens but there are some younger and less Experienced singers in it. We are looking for a fun Musical theater song, that will Challenge us!

Maybe you could do a something from Fiddler on the Roof. Songs from A Chorus Line would be more challenging, but they would be extremely fun too! Be Our Guest from Beauty and the Beast would be cool.

How do focal length and distance to subject affect depth of field?

Posted on December 22nd, 2009 by admin in focal | 3 Comments »

I understand the closer you are to the subject and the greater the focal length, the lower the depth of field will be. However, how do these compare with each other?
i.e. if I want the minimum depth of field, for portraits etc, should I zoom out and go closer to the subject or stand further away and zoom in?

Stand further away. Zoom to about 85mm. Open up your lens (smaller numbers) and faster shutter speed. Set camera to aperture priority. Now having said all of that, I find it is fun to zoom out and move really close to children, especially boys with big ears.
