Mozart – Ave verum corpus – Vienna boys choir

*———-*———-*

Mozart’s final completed sacred work was written on 17 June 1791, for the feast of Corpus Christi at the request of Anton Stoll, choirmaster at Baden where Mozart was visiting with his wife Constanze.

*———-*———-*

Hail the true body, born
of the Virgin Mary:
You who truly suffered and were sacrificed
on the cross for the sake of man.
From whose pierced flank
flowed water and blood:
Be a foretaste for us
in the trial of death.

*———-*———-*

Salve, verdadero cuerpo,
nacido de María Virgen,
que fue inmolado en la cruz
por los hombres,
cuyo lado perforado manó sangre y agua,
dejanos degustarte
en el trance de la muerte.

that is not true at …
that is not true at all. News of his death was in the newspapers in Vienna almost immediately. As for this piece, much is indeed known of its compositional history (see HC Robbins Landon, Mozarts Last Year). The only thing we don’t know is where he was buried. He wasn’t a pauper, but he was broke at the time, as usual, because he managed his actually decent salary very poorly.

    This amazing choir …
This amazing choir is swapping C and T lines to get the close harmony for a boys choir… it’s a wonderful performance!

    I am not a …
I am not a Christian, and tears fall when listening to this tune though the meaning of the word is not understood.

“Der Zorn Gottes” It is not.
The god doesn’t do any dealings.
The god is love, and the god gives everything to us.

Surely, the god of any religion is also the same.
I think that I listen to this tune always so.

    The wonder of some …
The wonder of some of Mozart’s pieces, especially this one, is that he shows how beautiful simplicity can be, and how simple beauty can be. It’s one of those uncontestable archetypes of art, that seem to have been waiting in heaven for a composer to be “downloaded” to earth. And that composer had to be Mozart.

    Me too. I was …
Me too. I was trying to explain to someone why I don’t like rock. If you played this to “that ilk” I suspect you’d get the usual blank looks (and charges of elitism).

Nope. We just like beautiful music …

    Mozart died in 1791 …
Mozart died in 1791 – no one knows the exact day – a pauper, well, broke, anyway. Yet you, margotlorena, claim to know that this was written on June 17, 1791 (you probably mean performed near Baden-Baden where, according to some know-it-all, Mozart was hanging out. Probably gambling. Speculation is what spec . . .

You have to have some image to maintain the pretense that this is a video and isn’t it more original than a slideshow of Mozart portraits?

I’m sure that this is not the actual score that they sang from. But it’s nice for people who want to follow the words, and the harmony.
Not everybody has to have all the score details to enjoy his piece.

Mozart was a frequent user of german 6th chords indeed (it’s not a 7th, actually) but in this piece — it must be due to my education — I couldn’t find a single one…

also, for the record, german, italian or french seventh chords are almost completely useless to know, they’re only covered briefly in a chapter in theory textbooks

  20. goldnuggetby says:

    first of all, the …
first of all, the mistake in the score is when the choir stops singing in the middle but theres no rests or empty measures in the score, secondly you seem to think that knowing german seventh chords makes u a good musician, any idiot can look up on wikipedia what that is, or what an itlalian or french chord is thats just memorization of a fact, and most composition professors in conservatories dont remember wat a german chord is, theres a lot more to being a musician then memorizing a textbook

  21. goldnuggetby says:

    great piece

also, i have studied theory before, and being able to recognize a german chord is almost completely useless and its so insignificant that its only covered briefly in one chapter in all theory books, so good for you on ur oustanding knowledge, plus being a musician is a lot more than knowing theory
