Fantasy in C minor for Piano, Chorus, and Orchestra, op. 80, by Ludwing van Beethoven. Daniel Baremboim at piano and directing the Berliner Philharmoniker and Deutschen Staatsopern Chorus. 1995.
Great piece to help … Great piece to help broaden peoples musical horizon. One of my longtime favorites for sure. Goosebumps all the way, again and again. The Video superb and Daniel Barenboim a class of his own. Thank you! P.S. A little painful though – the interruption.
this is such a … this is such a unique and beautiful (as always) work by Beethoven, its as if he united all his favorite genres, sonata, symphony, chamber music, quartet, lieder, variations and somehow managed to foreshadow the choral movement of his 9th symphony, this work could neverrrr get boring
A very good attempt … A very good attempt– fluent in both languages I attest to the difficulty of ever “translating” poerty. It’s an all but impossible task, but you’ve made a very workable approximation. If you want to blow your mind on a rhymed poetic TRANSLATION, read John Ciardi’s English version of “The Divine Comedy.” He actually managed to keep Dante’s Terz Rima structure and still bring across a very accurate version of the meaning.
great things that … great things that the hearts inter
bloom anew in beauty there.
if a spirit starts to soar,
he’s echoed by a spirit choir.
take within your precious soul
happy the gifts of beauteous art
when love and strength are single, whole,
God’s grace to man will play its part.
when the sounds of … when the sounds of magic reign
to speak words of inauguration
the glorious must appear and form
night and storms’ illumination
inner joy and outer calm
rule all things for those sublime
and arts and the springtime sun
bring the light of both to shine
charming sweet and … charming sweet and lovely soundings
of our lives’ harmonisings,
with the sense of beauty bringing
flowers of eternal blooming.
peace and joy in friendship file
like the wavelets mix and play
with what would be harsh and hostile
ordered as sublime and gay.
Because I like the … Because I like the choral fantasy, I looked up the choral lyrics and found that their prosaic english translations don’t give the english reader anything like a feel of the original german, which is lyrical and musical. So I make the attempt here at a translation that might give the english reader an experience more like that of a german reader. I have had to do some violence to the literal translation, but not much, I hope! Those who can read both languages can be the judges!!
