What’s the best way to improve my singing voice?

I’m 20 yrs old, I play guitar and my singing voice is awful. I know absolutely nothing about singing, what is involved etc. Any good Web-sites?, advice?, should I get an instructor?

Also on the side, Are there different ways to devolp your voice?
Classical vs Opera vs Rock. It seems like most blues/rock/folk musicians sound good but have deeper, raspy voices, espcially someone like Tom waits, compared to the very clean sound of classical singers. Do they train in a different way?

You must must must get a voice coach. Tell them up front what kind of music you want to sing, and if they’re willing/able to teach you that style. I would suspect your teacher would begin more classically and then adjust it to be more rock/folk; the classical training is the foundation off of which to build whatever voice you wish.

Take singing lessons from an expert. Practice practice practice. Your singing muscles can be developed with practice, good direction and patience.

I started taking voice lessons five years ago, and the amount of technicality behind singing astounded me. I recommend you get a teacher if you are serious about singing.

Practice vocal warming every day, drink warm tea, and do breathing exercises before you sing. and don’t yell because it strains your voice!
