What Is Advanced Colon Cancer

A diagnosis of advanced colon cancer generally means that the cancer has spread beyond the colon to at least one lymph node or to another organ, such as the liver. By the time the cancer reaches this point in its progression it may still be possible to perform surgery and remove the portion of the colon with cancer. Surgery may also be used to remove cancer that has spread to other organs. If the cancer is too large or advanced surgery may not be possible. Once colon cancer has spread it is necessary to administer chemotherapy in order to eliminate, or at least slow down the progress of the cancer that already spread beyond the colon.
